Street Children in Rabat
Number of volunteers
Child welfare and Education
As a volunteer in Rabat, Morocco, you’ll quickly notice the number of street children around the city. However, what won’t be as obvious, are the underlying sociocultural causes for this pervasive issue. In Morocco, it is illegal to have children out of wedlock. When an unmarried woman becomes pregnant, it’s not uncommon for her to give birth in unhygienic conditions rather than risking the social and legal repercussions of giving birth out of wedlock in a hospital. Giving birth in such conditions is not only unsafe for the mother, it is considered incredibly high risk for the newborn child as well. Many of these children end up on the street and a startlingly high number of them develop cerebral palsy.
